The
PMMDA (Polymer Machinery Manufacturers & Distributors Association)
will launched a new website aimed at introducing the POLYMER
INDUSTRY and all that it has
to offer to senior school and college pupils during their GCSE and A
level studies.
Through visits to industry it is hoped they will gain a better
understanding of plastic processes and related technologies. This in
turn will hopefully inspire them to consider further education
or future careers in Plastics.
Machinery suppliers and manufacturers are being encouraged to support
this initiative by registering on the website, and by doing so, giving
permission for local schools and colleges to contact them to arrange
for “industry visits”.
From
a pilot study carried out by the PMMDA last year, it was discovered
that students do not see the Plastics Industry or even engineering in
general as a “sexy” career and IT, Marketing and Tourism industries
seem to have more popularity amongst students. However, when students
from Coventry University were taken to Invicta Plastics in
Leicester, they were amazed by the facilities
and opportunities which were available ; from design, toolmaking, and
processing through to finishing. On return from the visit, the
students were “positively buzzing” with excitement about their insight
to the Plastics Industry.
The
new website will also offer links to educational establishments
offering Polymer related courses where schools & college careers
officers and students alike will be able to find out where they can
get further information from.
The
Attraction2Plastics website (although parts are still under
construction) is available for companies to register their interest at
www.attraction2plastics.org
and will be formally launched early APRIL.
